We Summoned Him

A vigil, a youth by the old swamp edge before the sea
Down below in dusky waves, stirring from his sleep
Mostly curiosity, wholly were we bored
We did not want to do our chores any longer

An incantation in the minorest of keys
The reckoning was living dormant in the seed
The bushes crept inside, conjured berries from the jam
Should have never played around in the forbidden land

We summoned him but then forgot to put him back
The spell was black hole black and then my blistered hand
The city wall erupted and became a hearth
He ate our eyes then hid us in a mound of earth

We summoned him but don’t know how to send him home
